In the late
nineteenth century Glasgow University moved its campus from the
Cathedral quarter of the City Centre to the newly developing West
End, and the main campus is situated in the leafy district of
Hillhead, on Gilmorehill, mid-way between the trees, statues and
waterways of Kelvin Park, and the cafes, shops and nightlife of
Byres Road.
The
conference venues are on University Avenue itself. Plenary sessions
will take place in the University Concert Hall, and seminar sessions
in the Arts and Crafts houses in University Gardens. Film screenings
and lunchtime sessions with writers will be in nearby Ashton Lane,
between University Gardens and Byres Road.
Glasgow is
among the most accessible venues in Britain, with two international
airports, good rail connections, and excellent city transport,
which includes a modernised Victorian underground. From small
ports on the nearby Ayrshire coast, there are several ferryboat
connections to Ireland. Along with the accommodation details we
will be posting a range of travel information and maps.
There’s
a wide range of options in Glasgow’s West End, with some
particularly good offers on University Accommodation. If you wish
to arrive before the conference or stay on afterwards, you may
book extra days at the conference rates while making your conference
booking. If you scroll to the foot of this document, you will
find a map of the immediate neighbourhood, which is very clear,
if not altogether to scale.

Very good value is CAIRNCROSS HOUSE, which is approximately
10 minutes walk from the main campus, through the Kelvingrove
Park, along the Kelvin Way.
The cost
for a single room is £18.66 (inc VAT) per person per night.
Please note breakfast is not provided in Cairncross House, but
there are well-appointed communal kitchens and an ample supply
of tea and coffee will be available from reception. In the vicinity
and close to the main campus are cafes that serve breakfasts.
Because CAIRNCROSS
HOUSE is such good value, it is quickly booked up during the summer
months. The Accommodation Office has, however, agreed to hold
in reserve a generous block of rooms for this conference, but
only until 17th May – after that date there is no guarantee
this accommodation will still be available.
During term-time,
this well-equipped modern building is a residence mainly for overseas
postgraduates, and it has very up-to-date facilities. To read

a range of cafes serving breakfasts
