ARRIVING IN GLASGOW

The conference desk will be open from 12 noon on Monday 27th July, and is on the ground floor of Number 4 University Gardens. The building is marked “English Literature” and University Gardens is almost directly opposite the University’s Main Gate, on University Avenue.

You can travel to the Main Gate of the University by First Scotland bus number 44 or 44A, for which there is a bus stop on Hope Street, a bare minute’s walk from Central Station: turn left coming out of the main concourse and cross to the opposite side of Hope Street. However, you need to have the exact fare ready (£1.35), as the drivers don’t have the facility to give change.

A taxi from the City Centre to the University or to most West End destinations is likely to cost in the region of £6.00, depending on traffic and the time of day.

from Glasgow International Airport

If you’re flying into this airport, you have two choices for making your way from the airport to the city: bus or taxi.

Because the airport is outside the city boundary, the taxis standing in the rank at the airport are the most expensive option, and likely to cost around £25. While this is acceptable if it can be shared among several people travelling together, you nonetheless need to make sure the driver knows the location to which you’re going.

Less expensive is to phone a city taxi, of which there are usually plenty nearby, and which will meet incoming passengers who phone them; the telephone operator will generally propose waiting for the black taxi at Bus Stop Number One. The number to call is 0141.429.7070, and you can expect to pay in the region of £20 for the journey. City cab drivers are familiar with all city locations.

If you’re travelling alone, or you are just two people together, far more economical is to take any of the airport buses in to the City Centre, and then take a taxi to your location. The airport buses feature free wi-fi and the drivers are helpful.

from Prestwick Airport

Here there are two choices: bus or train.

Bus is the slower option, and only worthwhile if you’re arriving after 23.00 and before 07.00. The bus takes you to the main bus station in the city, from which it’s easy to pick up a taxi to your location.

Train from Prestwick is very easy, and is a pleasant 50 minute journey along the Ayrshire coast. Just follow the signs within the airport, and you can reach the platforms without going outdoors. Remember to hold onto your boarding pass, and show it to the ticket seller on the train, as this entitles you to half price for the journey to the city. Stay on the train till it reaches its terminus, which is Central Station, and there is a taxi rank outside the station from which you can head to your destination; or you can catch the 44 or 44a bus to the University.

from Edinburgh Airport

Take the bus from the airport to Haymarket Station, and at Haymarket take any Glasgow train. There are trains every fifteen minutes during the day, and every half hour during the evening. Most trains from Edinburgh arrive at Glasgow’s Queen Street Station, where there is a taxi rank.
