GENERAL FACILITIES
The
University of Glasgow is at the heart of a district full of lively
cafes and bars, and good small independent shops. There are many useful
facilities on campus, and many more a short step away on Byres Road,
which you reach either from University Avenue or from Ashton Lane.
BREAKFAST
Three on-campus cafes provide breakfast facilities:
Further
details of on campus eating opportunities are given below, along with
sample prices.
ATM (Cash Machines)
There are two cash machines on campus. One is inside the John MacIntyre
Building (beside the Main Gate); the other is in the Queen Margaret
Union, at the end of University Gardens, towards Ashton Lane.
There
is a large selection of ATM Cash Machines on Byres Road.
POSTAL FACILITIES
There is a letter box on University Avenue at the foot of University
Gardens.
Stamps are available from most newsagents, e.g. the shop inside the
Queen Margaret Union.
There is a Post Office on Great Western Road, if you turn right at
the top of Byrers Road and walk for two short blocks.
BOOKSHOPS
There is an on-campus bookshop currently in the John MacIntyre Building
beside the Main Gate. It does not however stock books related to the
conference. On Byres Road, as you walk towards the Botanic Gardens,
is a good-sized Oxfam Bookshop, which is well-stocked with popular
reading. The outstanding second-hand bookshop in the university district
is CALADONIAN BOOKS on Great Western Road, between the top of Byres
Raod and the Kelvinbridge Underground station (nearer to Kelvinbridge).
In the City Centre there is a large Borders Bookshop on Buchanan Street,
and a waterstones Bookshop on Sauchihall Street.
ART
The University’s Hunterian Gallery, beside the library has the
largest collection of WHISTLER in the world, alongwith paintings by
Rembrandt, Rubens, Stubbs, and three very noted paintings by Chardin.
It also houses a significant collection of modern work, including
sculpture. Entry is free.
The Kelvingrove Gallery, which is reached by walking through the park,
down the Kelvin Way, has many works of interest, including a spectacular
Dali, and also an excellent café.
