Software for Teaching English and Scottish Language and Literature
and its Assessment (STELLA)
University of Glasgow
6 University Gardens
Glasgow G12 8QQ
Phone: 0141 330 4980
The aim of the STELLA project is to examine the applications of computers in tertiary level of the teaching of English and Scots, and to develop software in the broad area of English and Scottish Studies. Three departments of the University of Glasgow are involved in STELLA: English Language, English Literature, and Scottish Literature.
Software provided by STELLA includes:
A Guide to Scottish Literature, an electronic course in Scottish Literature, divided into three units: Medieval and Renaissance Literature 1375-1700; Poetry and Fiction 1700-1900; Poetry, Fiction and Drama since 1920. The essays are followed by notes, questions, and topics for discussion, and are suitable for use in courses from sixth-year studies upwards.
Older Scots, a software package containing information on the development of the Scots language from 1100 to modern times and is designed to help the beginning student appreciate Older Scots literature.
The Basics of Scots Metre (1, 2 & 3), a self-access software package
which introduces students to the main conventional metres used in Scottish
verse, especially iambic pentameter. It can be used both with students
who require a straightforward grounding in the subject and with those
who study it in greater depth. Unit 3 of the package deals with verse
of greater metrical variety.
Scots Teaching And Research Network (STARN)
Web site: www.arts.gla.ac.uk/www/english/comet/level2.htm
STARN
has been set up by the STELLA
project. It collects and makes available through the World Wide Web a
selection of Scottish literary and non-literary materials: prose, poetry,
drama, criticism and commentary. These materials are usually difficult
to access by other means. They are primarily intended for use by educationalists
and researchers into aspects of Scottish culture, particularly Scottish
literature, and varieties of Scots language.
