There are primarily three languages spoken in Scotland today: Scottish English, Scots and Scottish Gaelic.
Scottish Language Dictionaries defines
these languages as follows:
- Scottish English: the language of formal communication and administration
- Scots: a closely related language used or understood by the majority of the population
- Scottish Gaelic: the Celtic language traditionally associated with the Highlands and Islands.
Scottish Gaelic is closely related to Irish. Over the centuries it has been pushed further and further to the
north-west and the Western Isles, but is now enjoying a revival with more support from the public
and from government, especially in education.
