INTENSIVE POSTGRADUATE DIPLOMA IN RUSSIAN LANGUAGE

The one-year Diploma in Russian Language, which had been taught at Strathclyde University since the 1960s moved to Glasgow University in September 2004 as part of the Synergy programme of cooperation between the two institutions. This course is the only course of its kind in the UK. It provides an intensive programme in Russian language for graduates in other subjects who would find a thorough knowledge of Russian an asset in their chosen field. In the past the course has been of particular interest to graduates in area studies, history, social and natural sciences, management science, marketing and other related subjects. Those who have completed the course have gone into teaching, commerce, financial services, government, translating, postgraduate study and other occupations.

The course is specifically designed for those who have no knowledge of the language, but this does not preclude those who already know some Russian. In one academic year of intensive study it brings students to Pass Degree level in Russian language.

The course lasts for 9 months and involves approximately 15 hours instruction per week. It aims to provide a thorough grounding in the structure of the language; equal emphasis is given to both written and oral skills so that by the end of the course students will be able to communicate with a high degree of accuracy in a number of registers. Most teaching is done by native speakers of Russian while certain aspects (grammar, translation into English) are taught by native-English speakers. Regular use is made of audio and video materials.

The Students Awards Agency for Scotland normally allots a number of postgraduate awards (currently 3 per annum) to eligible students wishing to study on the course. These are allocated on the recommendation of the Slavonic Studies Section of the School of Modern Languages and Cultures. Nominations will be made to SAAS as soon as possible after 01 August 2006. Applicants who wish to be considered for one of these awards should apply to the Student Awards Agency for Scotland as soon as possible thereafter. They should also complete a postgraduate application for entry to the university and indicate in the relevant section that they wish to be considered for a quota award. Interviews for those interested in being put forward for an award are held in May.

Students resident in England or Wales may apply to their Local Education Authorities.

Students resident in Northern Ireland may apply to the Northern Ireland Library Board.
