Polish Lektorial Fellowship: 2004-2005
The University of Glasgow's Faculty of Arts in conjunction with the Polish Ministry of Education, Warsaw, offers one young scholar or teacher (normally under 40), usually from a department of English at any Polish university, the opportunity to study English and teach Polish in Glasgow at one of Europe's oldest universities (founded 1451). Glasgow University is at the forefront of modern language teaching methodology, and has some of the most advanced technology in the European Community for the teaching of a whole range of European languages. The Lektorial Fellowship scheme, funded jointly by the University of Glasgow and the Ministry of Education, Warsaw, provides a unique way of extending practical understanding of the acquisition of a foreign language (in this case Polish), while studying for a British qualification in English, Scottish and/or Slavonic studies. During the ten-month stay in Glasgow, the Lektorial Fellow will be required to teach up to a maximum of ten hours per week in the Polish unit of the Slavonic Studies Section of the School of Modern Languages and Cultures. All candidates are therefore required by the Polish Ministry of Education to have (or obtain) a diploma or else to demonstrate extensive or wide experience in the Teaching of Polish as a Foreign Language (TPFL). In return for teaching in the Polish unit, the Lektorial Fellow attends lectures and tutorials in the English/Scottish/Slavonic Studies departments, and engages in research on a topic approved by the Fellow's adviser of studies and the Convener of one of the following programmes: (1) English Language, (2) English Literature, (3) Scottish Literature, (4) European Culture, Thought and Literature and (5) Slavonic Studies. Candidates who present a clear programme of research and wish to register for the postgraduate MPhil degree in one of the areas listed above will be preferred. The Fellow will receive a stipend of £6,000, (six thousand pounds) paid in ten instalments, starting in October 2004. The costs of return travel must be paid by the successful candidate, unless provided by his/her home institution. The Lektorial Fellow should arrive in Glasgow one week before the beginning of the academic year, which usually falls on the last Thursday of September. Please complete the application form, on the attached leaflet, and ask two referees (for example your research supervisor or the Head of the department in which you teach) to write directly to Dr Elwira Grossman, Slavonic Studies Section, School of Modern Languages and Cultures, University of Glasgow, Glasgow G12 8RS, Scotland, Great Britain, marking the envelope 'Glasgow Polish Lektorial Fellowship', fax: +44 141 330 2297. One copy of all materials should also be sent to Ms Joanna Ślusarczyk, Departament Współpracy Międzynarodowej, Ministerstwo Edukacji Narodowej i Sportu, 00-918 Warszawa, Al. Szucha 25; fax: +48 22 628 8561. The closing date for applications is Wednesday, 04 February 2004. This is an appointment for one academic year and cannot normally be extended. Further information is available, on request, from Dr Grossman. Glasgow, 23 December 2003
