On 1 October 1999 the School of Slavonic, Central and East European Studies was established at the University of Glasgow, comprising the Department of Central and East European Studies (DCEES) and the Slavonic Studies Section of the School of Modern Languages and Cultures (SMLC).

Following a review in 2002-03, the School took over from the Institute of Central and East European Studies (ICEES) as the main interdisciplinary structure for Slavonic, Central and East European studies at Glasgow University and neighbouring higher education institutions. In addition to the two core departments, also represented are:

A new School Constitution was established with effect from session 2003-2004, and Prof. James D. White (DCEES) was appointed Head of the School for a three-year period.

The School exists to promote and develop teaching at all levels and research in all fields relating to Slavonic, Central and East European Studies, broadly conceived. The functions of the School are, in particular:

  • to sustain Glasgow University as a centre of excellence for teaching and research in the above fields;

  • to attract undergraduate and postgraduate students to the University;

  • to attract grants for research and to provide a mutually supportive framework for the conduct of such research;

  • to promote co-operation between the members internally by means of publications, seminar series, colloquia, conferences and other meetings;

  • to promote inter-departmental, inter-University and international co-operation as per the remit of the School.
