Palaeography is the study of early writing systems and deal with the deciphering and dating of scripts. 'Medieval Palaeography' covers texts written in Latin and Western European vernaculars during the period of c. 1000-1500. The scripts differ according to languages, periods, contents, regions and individual scribes.

Codicology is the study of the physical manufacture of books and their interrelationships.
