The Apostrophe

This section covers the various uses of the apostrophe. The main purpose of the apostrophe is to indicate possession.

Like many technical terms in English, the word apostrophe comes from Greek. It is pronounced aPOStrofi.

The term also has a somewhat different meaning: in literary theory, it is used to mean an address to a dead or absent person, an inanimate object, or an abstraction, as in "Death, where is thy sting?"

This section uses everyday terms.
