The main buildings of the University of Glasgow are on University Avenue in the West End of Glasgow, five minutes walk from Hillhead Underground station in Byres Rd.

Getting to Glasgow


Glasgow Airport has direct international flights from many major cities in Europe and North America together with an extensive network of internal U.K. connections. Glasgow Airport is 12 km (20 minutes) from the University.

The current taxi fare to the University is around 20, or take the citylink bus from outside the terminal building to Buchanan bus station. It is a short walk to Buchanan Street underground station - see underground directions below.

Prestwick Airport on the Ayrshire coast offers a limited range of connections from other destinations and has excellent public transport links to the City Centre.

Glasgow has excellent rail links.
Frequent services run to Edinburgh (50 minutes) and to London (5 hours)
Queen St. Station (served by Buchanan St.underground station) is the terminus for trains from London Kings Cross, East, Central, South and North East England, Edinburgh, Stirling, Perth, Dundee, Aberdeen, Inverness and the Highlands. Central Station (served by St. Enoch underground station) is the terminus for trains from London Euston, West, Central, South West and North West England.

Buchanan Street Bus Station is the long distance coach and bus terminus and is next to Buchanan St station - see underground directions below.

Arriving by car the most straightforward way is to leave the M8 at junction 19, then head west along St. Vincent Street and Argyle Street, or along Sauchiehall Street, until you arrive at the bottom of Byres Road. Once there, turn North/Right, then at the next set of lights turn East/right onto University Avenue. The Main Building is on the right at the top of the hill. Parking in the area around the university is very limited, but there is a car park at the bottom of Gt George St.

Travel within Glasgow


Strathclyde Buses - (orange) exact fare required.
Routes 44 & 44a from Hope Street (near Central Station) in the City Centre to the main University Campus at Hillhead cost (in Feb 2000) 75p. Other buses pass within walking distance of the University along Byres Road, Great Western Road, Dumbarton Road and Argyle Street.

Hillhead is the main underground station for the University and is 2 minutes from the University on Byres Road. If arriving at Queen St. Station, travel on the Inner Circle from Buchanan St., both are linked via a walkway. If arriving at Central Station follow signs for St. Enoch underground station, again use the Inner Circle. Journey time to the University is 10 minutes and the current single fare is 80p to any station.
On leaving Hillhead Underground station, turn left then left again at the traffic lights onto University Avenue. The Main Building is on the right at the top of the hill.

The taxi fare from the city centre, including the 2 main rail stations is approximately 4.50, and from Glasgow Airport approximately 20.00 - take a black taxi cab ("hackney") from the designated taxi stance. Black cabs can also be flagged-down in the street.
