UNIT ONE BASICS OF ENGLISH METRE Page 1

English metre is closely linked to the sound system of the language. Two components of this system are particularly relevant :

1. SYLLABLES 2. STRESS

Most syllables contain a vowel V: eg. A, OOH

Some syllables contain a vowel and a consonant CV or VC: eg. ZOO, ALL

Others have a vowel between one or more consonants, eg. LOT (CVC), PLOT (CCVC)

Words containing one syllable are MONOSYLLABIC
Words containing two syllables are DISYLLABIC
Words containing two or more syllables are POLYSYLLABIC
